Eggs are porous, but covered with a natural coated called a bloom. The bloom covers the eggs to seal the shell and to prevent the transfer of bacteria.
Washing the egg removes the bloom, and washing the eg in cold water can actually allow bacteria to enter the egg more quickly.
Many European countries restrict egg washing.
