Unwashed Eggs

  1. Are unwashed eggs safe?
    • Of course they are!
  2. Is dirty better?
    • Actually, yes.
    • Eggs are porous, but covered with a natural coated called a bloom. The bloom covers the eggs to seal the shell and to prevent the transfer of bacteria.
    • Washing the egg removes the bloom, and washing the eg in cold water can actually allow bacteria to enter the egg more quickly.
    • Many European countries restrict egg washing.
  3. Should I refrigerate unwashed eggs?
    • If you’d like to, you can. But you don’t have to.
    • Unwashed eggs can last for several weeks on the counter.
  4. Should I wash my eggs?
    • If you must, please wash your eggs in warm water – at least 90 degrees Fahrenheit. Then dry them thoroughly and put them in the refrigerator.
